History of SteamPunk SteamPunk is most influenced by the 19th century scientific romances of Jules Veme, H.G. Wells, and Mary Shelley. People have explored the possibility of using steam as a means of transmitting power since the time of the Greeks. The first recorded description of the steam engine, the Aeolipile, was described in the first century B.C.S by Vitruvius. Since then people have had high hopes for the practical applications of the steam-based technology, sometimes succesful and sometimes not. The first steam Turbine was devised by the Ottoman and used to drive a roasting jack. The device was built and used in Europe, Leonardo DaVinci designed a "steam cannon" called the Architonnerre cannon, attributing the basic concept to Archimedes.
